Sports as an auxiliary to avoid hair loss

Nowadays, it is known that while a sedentary lifestyle represents a risk factor for the development of numerous chronic diseases (especially cardiovascular ones which represent one of the main causes of death in the occidental world); leading a physically active life brings several benefits for health, not only physical but also psychological.

By: Mario Alberto González Vera

According to some studies, there seems to be a relation between exercising and life expectation, in a way that people who are more physically active tend to live longer than those who are not.

On the other hand, it is a reality that people who exercise on a regular basis have the ‘feeling’ that they are healthier than before they started exercising, both from a physical and mental point of view, that is to say, they have a better quality of life. It is obvious then, that exercising is positive for health. The human body has been designed to move and therefore requires exercise regularly to keep itself functional and avoid disease. We consider physical activity every movement of the body produced by the muscles that requires energy consumption. The definition of Physical exercise defines such activity as ‘every programmed, structured and repetitive movement of the body which is performed to improve or maintain one or more components of a healthy physical state’. When the amount of physical activity does no reach the minimum, we refer to ‘sedentary lifestyle’.

¿How does practising sports improves hair health?

Hair is composed by common and fully-developed hairs strands which represent a complex structure known as the hair-sebaceous follicle. Its thickness, shape, color and length vary in all human races. The number of hairs and their color also vary from person to person. A human being has from 100.000 to 130.000 hairs. Their color is defined by the predominance of a mineral: black hair have more magnesium, brown hair have more lead and red, iron. Besides minerals, there are other substances that constitute hair: the most important one is keratin. Hair is made of fine elastic protein fibers of keratin.

The hair follicle. The hair follicle is one of the two component parts of a hair. It is located at a higher depth in the scalp and it is composed by the root and the blood vessels that allow its nutrition. A special follicle, located below the skin, is the one in charge of producing keratin cells that constantly come out to light. A sebaceous gland rests next to it and lubricates both hair and skin. A follicle has an active life of 3 to 6 years. Its structure is made of a womb, a papilla, a follicular orifice, the erector muscle and the isthmus. Nowadays, pace of life, stress, tiredness, lack of exercise and low-mineral diets have inevitable consequences on our hair’s life. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, some medications or certain inadequate hair care treatments also reflect on our hair. A diet that is rich in minerals and proteins, that is to say, a balanced nutrition, will provide the hair with the necessary elements for it to stay healthy and strong. There are specific vitamins and trace elements capable of acting directly on the hair helping to give a healthier look even to the most punished hair. Exercising on regular basis activates body circulation and improves the tone of the hair follicle; it also balances the hormonal functioning of the body and, in men for example, it prevents that an excess of testosterone results in dihydrotestosterone (unstable testosterone) which can lead to hair loss or alopecia. Sweating also helps eliminate toxins which might interfere with a healthy functioning of the follicle. Based on all of this information, we can conclude that the combination of exercise and a proper diet will help us preserve not only our bodies’ health but also our hair health.
